General information

Possible means of transporting bicycles (with prices) other than by using storage facilities on trains, e.g. as portable loads, cycle hire, cycles sent on

  • Bicycle as registered luggage
Cycles are sent on by Hermes Versand Service, in cooperation with neighbouring railways or foreign forwarders in the case of destinations outside Germany. Within Germany, luggage can only be conveyed from and to postal addresses. Bicycles can be sent on to Luxembourg, France, Austria, Italy (only Alto Adige/Bolzano district) and Switzerland.
The first two bicycles sent on cost EUR 24.10 each for domestic carriage, bicycles 3 and 4 EUR 18.10 each. A surcharge of EUR 6.90 per item is levied for bicycles sent on to destinations abroad, from and to the North Sea islands and to some airports in Germany. Packing is always required for bicycles sent on. This can be ordered for EUR 5.10 at all sales points. The Hermes driver brings the packing when collecting the bicycle. Luggage is delivered within two working days in Germany and within 3 to 5 working days for destinations abroad depending on the international route involved.

Further information on the sending-on of luggage can be obtained from DB's Travel Service under 11 8 61 (from within Germany)
or by calling the Hermes Versand Service hotline under 0900 1311211.

  • Carriage of cycles on trains as portable loads
Folding bicycles may be carried folded up and packaged at no charge on all trains as long as they fit into the at-seat luggage facilities. This provision only applies for bicycles in dismantled and packaged condition.

  • Cycle hire
Bicycles can be hired from around 250 bike hire points run by other parties in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn. The customer is required to present some means of identification and to leave a deposit. Young people under the age of 16 must be accompanied by adults for such transactions. The hire fee is between EUR 3 and EUR 12.70 per day. Bikes must be returned to the point of hire.

Other bike-related services (e.g. cycle storage facilities)

  • Call a Bike
This is a product offering provided by DB subsidiary DB Rent. A fleet of highly attractive hi-tech bikes is available for use in urban areas in Munich, Berlin, Frankfurt am Main and Cologne.

These CallBikes can be hired out or returned any time by calling the service hotline 07000 5225522 (within Germany) or visiting www.callabike.de.

The customer is given an individual release code with which to unlock their CallBike. New customers are required to register before first riding a hire bike, e.g. online under http://www.callabike.de website , when they will be given a customer number.

Call a Bike costs EUR 0.06 per minute and max. EUR 15 per day. There is a flat-rate weekly charge of EUR 60. Payment is by credit card or direct debit. Further information can be obtained from the service hotline cited above.
